Brain is a complex functional network, which consists of highly interconnected nerve cells via synapses. It is essential for distinct brain functions to implement different neuron types in a well-organized architecture with specific connectivity pattern. Our team focuses on the plasticity changes of neural network under normal, aging, and pathological conditions. By means of state-of-the-art microscopy techniques including multi-photon calcium imaging, super-resolution light microscopy and three-dimensional electron microscopy, we set out to understand the neural wiring principles underlying sensation, memory, and learning, as well as reveal pathological mechanisms behind brain dysfunction by characterizing aging- and disease-related structural changes.
